Björlanda Church

Björlanda church was built in the middle of the 13th century on the site that has served as the parish center since the Iron Age, as the adjacent burial ground shows. In 1734, the church was extended to the east, the chancel was widened and given a polygonal finish, and more and larger windows were added. In 1914, the church was built with an armory in the west and a sacristy in the north. The paintings on the north wall of the nave are medieval, while those in the choir were probably added during the rebuilding in the 18th century. In 1954, the artist Kristian Lundstedt executed the peculiar ceiling painting with, among other things, scenes from the Second World War. The church has a medieval baptismal font attributed to Thorkillus, who also carved Säve's and Torslanda's fonts.
