This is the main entrance to the Visby Old Town which is perfectly preserved and still lived in. With its narrow cobblestone streets, houses with giant rose bushes, cathedral and the old town square, Visby Old Town is a must see place in Sweden.
Visby was midway through its annual medieval festival and the town was buzzing with visitors from around the world. Many people dressed in period ostume were coming and going through the historic gate. Wonderful unless you are a local!
Österport is one of the most iconic entrances to the medieval town of Visby, and it truly feels like walking through a portal back in time. I visited while in town on a cruise and was immediately impressed by how well-preserved and majestic this gate still is.nOnce the main eastern gateway into the fortified city, Österport stands tall with its twin towers and heavy stone structure, offering a glimpse into Visby’s rich Hanseatic history. You can still see the grooves from the old portcullis, and standing beneath the arch, it’s easy to picture knights and merchants passing through centuries ago.nIt’s a great starting point for a walking tour along the city wall or through the cobbled streets of Old Town. Definitely worth stopping to admire its architecture and take in the history. A must-see if you're exploring Visby!
It was outside the Eastern Gate of Visby in 1361 that the fishermen and farmers of Gotland tried to defend their island from invasion by the Danish King Valdemar and his professional Viking Army. The merchants of Visby locked the gates of the City and refused to support the Gotland army because they wanted to remain neutral! They had to spend the night sleeping in fields under the East city walls, to then fight the Danes next morning from hastily constructed earthworks. Initial Viking bows and crossbow bolts created havoc in the Gotland army so when infantry went shortly after, the battle became a massacre. Of the Gotland army of c.2000, 1800 were killed. The Danes lost around 300 out of 2,500 . The burial pits filled with bodies from the Gotland army provided archaeologists a treasure trove of material from the early medieval period. They were buried as is, with weapons and armour. After the battle, Valdemar sent three empty beer barrels into Visby and told the merchants to fill them with gold and silver or face the sack of the city. Needless to say they complied. Denmark now controlled one of the key islands of the Baltic Trade monopolised previously by the German Hanseatic League.
Great historical site and part of the city. The whole wall is a must see and is always great to visit.
