Beautiful church, chock-a-block with art from across the centuries, floor memorials worn beyond reading, baroque decor, and just general beauty. Interesting, compared to churches in the UK and to the south, the aesthetic impact of visible brick construction.nnAccessible via the Go City card. Worth picking up the little brochure multiple languages as a guide. Definitely worth the visit.
Having seen the statue of George and the Dragon in stone on the street during a city tour, seeing the original in wood was a must see, it does not disappoint.nThe inside is full of fantastic carvings including some Lutheran angels you’ll have to do the audio tour or google this.
My visit included being part of the church community and ceremony. It was a great experience. As an English speaker, they gave me a brochure that guided me through the process. I was welcome to the communion too. Great people and amazing church experience. The facade of church is Italian baroque, interior is french gothic style. Mesmerizing
We visited Storkyrkan Cathedral while stopping in Stockholm for the day during our cruise, and it was one of the highlights of our time in the city. Located right next to the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan, this cathedral is impossible to miss—with its rare pink exterior that really stands out among the other historic buildings. It’s not just eye-catching from the outside—the interior is absolutely worth the visit.nnThere’s a 60 SEK entrance fee or free with the Stockholm Pass, and I’d definitely say it’s money well spent. The inside is both peaceful and awe-inspiring, filled with gorgeous Gothic brickwork, soaring ceilings, and beautiful stained-glass windows. The royal pews are especially ornate, and the silver altar is incredibly detailed and unlike anything we’ve seen in other European cathedrals.nnOne of the most impressive features is the original wooden sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon. It’s life-sized and carved with stunning detail—it’s not just a religious piece, but also a powerful symbol of Sweden’s historic struggle for independence. Even if you’re not a history buff, the craftsmanship alone makes it worth seeing.nnSince the cathedral is right next to the Nobel Museum and Stortorget square, it’s easy to include in your walking tour of the Old Town. We were short on time due to the cruise schedule, but we were so glad we prioritized this stop. Storkyrkan is Stockholm’s oldest church, dating back to the 1200s, and it still plays an important role in Swedish royal events today—including weddings and coronations.nnWhether you’re into architecture, history, or just love a good photo spot, don’t skip this one!
Well I was sceptical about St George slaying the Dragon until I saw the definitive proof in the sculpture of the incident in Stockholm’s medieval Cathedral. A beautiful rich in history building dating from 1279. It is home to other unique objects including the legendary Vädersoltavlan 1535. and Lena Lervik’s sculpture ”Joseph and Mary” 2002.
