I visited Trollhättan during the Fallens Dagar festival July 18–20, 2025, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Sweden. Watching the waterfalls when the floodgates open is absolutely breathtaking – the sound, the force of the water, and the overall atmosphere make it truly special. It's a fascinating mix of nature and human engineering.nnBefore the water release, I enjoyed a peaceful walk through Spikön, the small island right in the middle of the river. It’s a lovely green space with walking paths, benches, and beautiful views of the water from different angles. It’s also a great spot if you want a quieter experience away from the main crowd.nnThe area around the falls is full of history, with old locks, bridges, and viewpoints like Kungsportsbron and near the Olidan power station. During the festival, the whole place comes alive with live music, food trucks, family activities, and a happy, buzzing crowd.nnTip: Make sure to get to your viewing spot at least 15 minutes early before the scheduled water release – the best spots fill up fast, especially near the bridges and lock areas.
Nice place - Once saw the release of water 40+ years ago. Nowadays there is no regular release of water in the falls. But it's still impressive.n2024 info: Due to the ongoing energy crisis there will be no release of water in the falls during the summer of 2024. This is because the water is needed for the energy production of the city's two water power plants. There will only be release of water in the falls during the Waterfall Days festival between July 19th to 21st.

The daily opening of the dam gates during the summer is a nice happening. I would go there again, it is really worth it. Tip: Do not stand on the bridge as anybody else. When standing on the bridge looking towards the falls, go to the left and alongside the riverbed. There are some nice platforms with a great view to the gates.
Great spot to check out. We happened to be at the bottom when they released the water.
