Beautiful and peaceful cathedral with stunning brick architecture and rich history. The interior is well-preserved, with detailed wood carvings and a calm, spiritual atmosphere. A must-visit when in Västerås!
Looks like a nice simple church from the outside, but it's quite beautiful inside. Recommend visiting and enjoying a few moments inside. No entry fee.nIn the summer, there is a free organ concert at noon on Saturdays.
Very relegion otianted place.....so sacred
Beautifully preserved medieval church with countless pieces of art and history on every wall and tucked in every corner. Make sure to look in the treasury in the northwest corner left side after you enter for amazing artifacts and to learn about this church's place in the history of the Reformation in Sweden. Staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
Västerås Cathedral is a church building in the northern part of the inner city of Västerås. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Västerås and the parish church of the Västerås Cathedral Parish within the Church of Sweden.nnThe church was founded in the 12th century, but is considered to have been consecrated in 1271 after a major renovation. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. The cathedral received its current form as a five-aisled hall church in the early 16th century, while the spire and outer roof were designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger in the 1690s. The whitewashed blinds are particularly noticeable on the west facade.nnVästerås is mentioned as a bishop's seat in written sources from 1164, with a tradition dating back to the 11th century. The cathedral has since been the main church for the Diocese of Västerås. King Erik XIV, nobles from the Brahe and Sture families, as well as bishops and archbishops, are buried in the church, among others.
