A fantastic trip. You definitely need to set aside a full day for this excursion. You can depart from Slussen. Vaxholm Island is enchanting at any time of year. In winter, the ice floes that the ship breaks through add to the experience. It's warm inside the ship, so you can relax and admire the views. The island has numerous hiking trails. It's worth sailing to the island itself. You can find the timetable online and on the island. A tour of the island will take you a few hours. You can also return to central Stockholm by bus. The double-decker bus departs from a stop right by the harbor, which is easy to find.
