Ankenes is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It encompassed much of the present-day municipality of Narvik, outside of the city of Narvik. Today, Ankenes is a largely residential area west of Narvik, located on the southern side of Beis Fjord. The main village in Ankenes is Ankenesstrand. It was the old administrative centre of Ankenes and it is the location of the Ankenes Church.The European route E6 highway is the main thoroughfare through Ankenes and it follows the shoreline of the Ofotfjorden and Beis Fjord and it then crosses the fjord over the 375m long Beisfjord Bridge where it then reaches the city of Narvik.HistoryThe old municipality of Ofoten was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Ofoten included all of the Ankenes area. On 1 January 1884, Ofoten was dissolved and split into two municipalities: Ankenes and Evindnæs. Initially, Ankenes had 1,734 residents. On 1 January 1902, the city of Narvik (population: 3,705) was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3,023. On 1 January 1974, the municipality of Ankenes was merged with the city of Narvik to form the municipality of Narvik. Prior to the merger, Ankenes had 7,022 inhabitants and Narvik had 12,758.
