Barbu is part of the municipality of Arendal in the region of Sørlandet. Until 1902 Barbu was a municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. Today the name Barbu most of all refer to the center of the former municipality, a village-like place located in front of Galtesund. Barbu is also a parish (sogn) in Arendal of the Diocese of Agder og Telemark.NameThe Old Norse form of the name is Berubú which may be derived from the female name Bera or it may be from the name of the local river.HistoryOriginally, Barbu was a part of the municipality of Austre Moland that was created in 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 1 May 1878, Austre Moland was divided to form three municipalities: Barbu (population: 4,874), Austre Moland (population: 2,524), and Tromøy (population: 2,320).On 1 January 1902, Barbu became a part of the municipality of Arendal. Before the merger, Barbu had a population of 6,787.
