Centre on Law & Social Transformation (LawTransform) advances interdisciplinary research on the potential of law as an instrument of social change.
Centre on Law & Social Transformation aims to be a dynamo for research on the potential and limits of law as an instrument of social change locally and globally. It aims to further stimulate research in this field in Bergen, foster a dynamic academic environment for socio-legal studies in Norway, and serve as the hub of a virtual global centre.
The Centre on Law & Social Transformation is profoundly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars, students and practitioners from across institutions and academic fields around questions related to the functioning and effects of law and legal institutions. Particular focus is on the use of law and legal mobilisation in pursuit of social transformation (lawfare) and the consequences of such strategies.
Through collaboration on innovative research projects and courses; and initiatives such as the Annual Law & Social Transformation Week in Bergen, with project workshops, public lectures, PhD courses and spaces for informal engagement and debate; a Norwegian Conference on Law & Society, a Law & Social Change Seminar Series the Centre on Law & Social Transformation aims to foster a vibrant intellectual environment, combining scientific curiosity, methodological rigour and social engagement – thus stimulating empirical, conceptual and theoretical development and bringing forth practically relevant insights.
