Hølonda is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. Hølonda encompasses the southwestern part of the present-day municipality of Melhus, west of the Gaula River. The main church for the area is Hølonda Church.HistoryThe municipality of Høilandet was established in 1865 when it was separated from the old municipality of Melhus. The new municipality had an initial population of 1,818. On 1 January 1964, Hølonda was merged with Horg, Flå, Melhus, and part of Buvik to form a new, larger municipality of Melhus. Prior to the merger Hølonda had a population of 1,428.NameThe municipality was named Hølonda . The first element is høy which means "high" and the last element is the plural form of land which means "land" or "district". Prior to 1889, the name was written Høilandet, then from 1889 until 1931 it was written Hølandet, and then since 1932 it has been spelled Hølonda. See also: Names of Høland and Høylandet
