Curatorial Team Momentum 8: Jonatan Habib Engqvist (SE), Birta Gudjonsdottir (IS), Stefanie Hessler (DE) and Toke Lykkeberg (DK)
Jonatan Habib Engqvist (Sweden) has a background in Philosophy and Aesthetic theory. Between 2009 and 2014 he has been project coordinator for visual art at the Swedish Arts Grants Committee´s International exchange and residency programme, Iaspis. He has lectured and curated shows internationally on a freelance basis and was curator of the visual art focus of Reykjavík Arts Festival 2012. Among other things he has been employed as curator at Moderna Museet (2008-09) and worked at The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (2005-07). He has written for and edited several journals and is editor in mischief at tsnok.se. Books include: In Dependence – Collaboration and Artists´ initiatives (Torpedo Press, 2013), Work, Work, Work – A Reader on Art and Labour (with Engqvist, Masucci, Rosendahl & Widenheim, Steinberg Press, 2012), Dharavi: Documenting Informalities (with Lantz, KKH, 2008, Academic Foundation, New Delhi 2009). Currently engaged in the project Thinking through painting with a forthcoming publication and exhibition during 2014.
Birta Gudjonsdottir (b. 1977) is a curator and artist living in Reykjavik.
She has the position of chief curator at the National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavik. In 2009-11 she had the position as director of The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik. In 2008-09 she had the position of Artistic Director of exhibition space 101 Projects, Reykjavik. In 2008 she worked as curator´s assistant at MuHKA; Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2007-08 she took part in the Nordic Baltic Curatorial Platform project, initiated by FRAME, Finland. In 2005-08 she worked as a curator at SAFN, Private Contemporary Art Collection, Reykjavik. Gudjonsdottir has independently curated over twenty exhibitions in Berlin, Boden, Copenhagen, Oslo, Melbourne, New York, St. Petersburg and most art museums and art spaces in Iceland. In 2011 she participated in the Curatorial Intensive program of ICI; Independent Curators International, New York. In 2011 she participated in The Cornwall Workshop, organised by Tate St. Ives. She has been on the boards of the Museum Council of Iceland, The Art Theory Association of Iceland and The Icelandic Academy of the Arts and on advisory boards of The Icelandic Art Center. Since 2002 she has produced her home-gallery Dwarf Gallery, Reykjavik. She is a member of IKT, International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art.
Stefanie Hessler (Germany/Sweden1987) is an independent curator and writer from Germany, currently based in Sweden. She is the co-founder of the art space Andquestionmark in Stockholm (with Carsten Höller). Recent curated projects include the exhibition “Outside” at Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation with a film screening at Moderna Museet in Stockholm; “Klara Lidén: The Myth of Progress (Moonwalk)” at Lugar a Dudas in Cali; “The Return of the Object” at Invaliden1 in Berlin; “Marjetica Potrč. Caracas: Dry Toilet” at Die Ecke Arte Contemporáneo in Santiago de Chile and the festival and symposium “Performing Recalcitrance” at the Royal Institute of Art Stockholm. Hessler regularly writes for art magazines and has published articles in several exhibition catalogs, for instance for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago de Chile and Museum DKM in Duisburg, and co-edited books such as “Máquina de Escrever / Typewriter” published by Capacete São Paulo and “Katja Aglert: Winter Event – antifreeze” published by Art & Theory Stockholm. During the 2010 Bienal de São Paulo, Hessler initiated and wrote the blog “Studio Visits” for the Goethe-Institut in Brazil. She has received several curatorial research and travel grants by the Goethe-Institut, Institut français and Acción Cultural Española, and regularly teaches and lectures at postsecondary educational institutions. Hessler is currently curating the exhibition “Speed” at the Mamam – Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães in Recife.
Toke Lykkeberg (Denmark, 1977) is a freelance art critic and curator based in Copenhagen. He is the co-founder of the artist-run space IMO in Copenhagen and was its director from 2009 to 2013. He was an art critic for the financial daily Dagbladet Børsen from 2007 to 2010 and columnist and Paris correspondant for the independent daily Dagbladet Information from 2003 to 2006. He has curated half a hundred exhibitions in Denmark, USA, France, Holland and Vietnam and most recently the group show L’embarras at Toves (Copenhagen, 2014), the exhibition Branding as Branding: The Making of Superflex at Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen, 2013) and the group exhibition Rematerialized at New Galerie (Paris/New York, 2013). Apart from teaching and lecturing, he is currently a regular contributor to the Norwegian art publication Kunstkritikk and the American DIS Magazine. Most recently, he has published the monograph Zevs – L’Exécution d’une image (Gallimard, 2014) and the essay Ikke-kunst som sidste kunstneriske tendens (Kopenhagen, 2013). He has studied art history, cultural studies and philosophy at Københavns Universitet and Université Paris X.
