After my recent trip to Spain, I didn't think I will be amazed with other Cathedrals. Well, I was impressed with Nidaros Cathedral, too. I am happy to have an opportunity to visit it. I hope that some of included pictures will describe it better than I could.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesIkke sikker
Really a must do when you are in the city. The cathedral is truly impressive and, if you are lucky, there are some guides just within the entrance who can share with you some history, as well as show you where some stonemasons might have left their marks. We were also lucky that there was a lady who played the organ for a short while, adding to the beauty of the place. The ceilings and stained glass reflect the old Catholic style, but the church is now a Lutheran one. There is a souvenir store next door, where you can buy the tickets, which costs 120 NOK per person. Across the courtyard, there was another museum which was showcasing military arms and uniforms, at the old cardinal's home, but we did not have the time to visit that.
The cathedral is almost 1000 years old and is well maintained. There is a charge to visit , but this is well worth it, and you can buy a combined ticket to see the adjoining Norwegian Crown Jewels and Bishops Palace, which results in an overall saving. The cathedral's website has details of ticket prices. The Kings and Queens of Norway are crowned here, as Trondheim used to be the capital city of Norway, hence the Crown Jewels being kept in an adjacent building. Inside the cathedral's architecture is magnificent with beautiful stained glass windows and ornate stone carvings. You are also able to visit an underground crypt with a display of ancient headstones which have been recovered. When we visited a large screen had been erected in the nave to show a film, as the building also serves the community in other ways.
The cathedral is very interesting and beautiful from the in and outside. I joined the English tour which was very detailed and informative.
I did not enter, only walked around outside. Really beautiful building with fine detailed sculptures. Definitely worth the visit.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetid
The Cathedral is a must see in Trondheim. The best thing is to get a combination ticket which includes the Archbishop's Palace Museum because there a film shows the restoration work both already completed and ongoing in quite some detail. One gets a sense of proportion of the time needed to carry out this work - I suspect some of the experts involved hope that the next generation - or the one after that - will finish this work. The main newer organ in the church is quite a sight to behold.
What the dome?! What an absolute beauty of a unit. Heart of Trondheim, grave of Saint Olav, and a masterpiece architectural construction. This puts the “heim” in Trondheim. Every week there is free organ meditation, and occasionally beautiful music from local choirs and orchestras. The grandest thing in all of norway, apart from the nature and economy of course.
The cathedral is built over the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking king who converted Norway to Christianity. The work on Nidaros Cathedral began in 1070 and was completed around 1300.
Wow!! Pictures can’t tell how beautiful and big this cathedral is. Can’t believe how anyone can build such a magnificent cathedral. I really recommend you to visit this place!!!!Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesIkke sikker
