Historie

Norwegian cowhides are in general sought after for their high quality. We sell hides from our farm, from a preserved old Norwegian cow breed called colour sided cattle. The breed has only abot 1000 female cows, and is in risk of extinction. The colour sided cattle have a lot of fantastic qualities other than being part of the Norwegian cultural heritage. They have good quality milk and meat. They are good grazers, specialized for mountain and forest foraging, eating more diversely than more refined cow breeds, and also displaying more social behaviour and playfullness. They are very intelligent and beautiful, predominantly with black or dark brown sides and various degrees of white markings and backbone (hence the breed name), but ranging all the way to totally white. The markings are symmetrical on both sides of the animal. We promote our cowskins as ethical furs or ethical cowhides based on that: it supports uppholding a near extinct old animal breed, the skins are from fully grown animals (2 year old bulls, or cows going out of production), the calves are allowed to suckle, the animals have a life rich in grazing outdoors either in the beautiful Norwegian wilderness or marginal farmed land (5-6 months per year, which is just about our whole green season), they are given daily opportunity to go outside in the winter, and are given the opportunity to have natural cow behaviour, and a wide selection of feed (hay, silage, potatoes, fruit and vegetables). Their animal welfare is good. They are from a small scale family farm, and it helps support the preserved farm buildings themselves, the barn being from 1886.
