Historie

Nyksund was for many years an abandoned fishing village in the North of Norway off the island of Vesterålen. In the beginning of year 2000 people started up to save this wonderful village. Today there are still many building vacate with possibilities for all sort's. There is a busy summer season with tourists and a calm private time the rest of the year. Amazing nature and of course the wonderful Northern Lights in the winter. Remember this is an abandoned fishing village due to globalization.

Vår oppgave

Redderiet Nyksund Kulturefabrikk is a multi-disciplinary cultural arts organization located km 500 north of the Arctic Circle in the town of Nyksund In Vesterålen, Norway. This remote, yet artistically rich area is home to a disparate array of gifted artists that hunger for art and culture, and a community that can help bring a creative vision together from this remote part of the country. Nyksund, an abandoned fishing village rich with history, and Redderiet, an abandoned fishing factory, have become home to this mission.
Our mission to create a cross-cultural dialogue between art, music, local history and culture, and it is well on its way. In August of 2011 we produced and hosted a contemporary music festival featuring cutting edge artists from Northern Norway. We launched the exhibition space with a much-noted Fall Exhibition that included works from many of the extraordinary artists in the area. Through the year we exhibit the works of local artists and welcome the quickly growing numbers of visitors to Nyksund.
To venerate local and regional history, which we see as an integrative cultural source and the driving spirit behind this community, and culture as a whole, is the return and restoration of historical boats that have played a huge role in the history of the town itself. This project has allowed Redderiet to work with local boat craftsmen and is under development to restore the first vessel to its original fashion. We believe the significance lies in the cross cultural dialogue between local fishing and sea-faring history and the arts, and that this unique and purposeful creative collaboration will communities and new synergies together, while also sharing this vision with the world.
An integral factor that we are eager to develop involves the educational component. We believe it would be of great significance to develop an ongoing artist seminar series that would cross-pollinate with significant artists and arts programs from outside and within the area. Nyksund now has the capacity to house a significant number of visitors. We see this as also a positive community building benefit for the town of Nyksund.
