About the teacher:
Romi started her dance career as early as the age of 6 and continues to keep up her practice even today. She has mastered the Tanjavoore style of Bharatanatyam under the guidance several Gurus, her main teacher being Guru Smt. Hemamalini Suresh. She did her Guru-vandana in 2012. She is also the exponent of Kuchipudi, with training guidance from Guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, the propounder of this classical dance form.
She learnt Kathak from eminent teachers, Guru Smt. Paromita Moitra (disciple of Kathak exponent Guru Pt. Birju Maharaj) and Guru Smt. Meghamita Mitra (disciple of Kathak exponent Guru Smt. Sumitra Mishra). She is trained in Gaudiya nritya (classical dance of Bengal) under the tutelage of Guru Dr. Mahua Mukherjee, the godmother of the dance form.
Apart from her classical bases, she experted in several forms of folk dances, namely- Lavani from Maharashtra, Raas dandiya from Gujrat, Bhangra from Punjab, Nachni & Shantal from West Bengal, Bihu from Assam, Ghoomar from Rajasthan, Kummi from Tamil Nadu, Kolattam from Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka, Rauf from Kashmir and so on.
She has mastered the skill of modern Indian dance as well as free style and contemporary dance moves under the able guidance of Smt. Mamata Shankar, daughter of the founder of contemporary dance- Pt. Uday Shankar. She even mastered the art of Manipuri nritya from the same source. She also fits into Western dance styles and presently learning zumba and salsa.
She learnt Hindustani classical music for about 10 years and later mastered in Najrul-geeti. She has a vivid knowledge in Karnatic classical music and the rhythm system.
About the dance school:
Saraswat- indisk klassisk og bollywood danseskole is located in Trondheim, Norway. The major dance form being taught here is Bharatanatyam (Bharat- India; Natyam- dance) and Kuchipudi. Other than this, Kathak, folk dances and bollywood are also being prioritized.
Ravindranritya adds an extra dignity to this dance school. Ravindranrtya is a classical based creative and contemporary dance form on the songs composed by the great Indian legend Ravindranath Tagore. The dance uses mostly Manipuri, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathakali, Kuchipudi and very less of kathak.
The course follows every Sunday at the Sælen skole, Fyllingsdalen, Bergen.
Workshops on Natya-shastra, Indian classical dance and Bollywood dance are being conducted during vacations and special request.
The school is registered to the OFAAL (Oriental Fine Arts Academy of London) board of exams. Students can give exams and acquire their certificates in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Ravindranritya from this renowned board of exams.
Charges per student per semester is 300 NOK and for 2 people joining from the same family, it is 500 NOK. The fee structure is subject to change depending on future circumstances.
