Welcome to the SustainFish research project. Its purpose is to investigate implementation of certification schemes in the Aquaculture industry.
SUSTAIN-FISH - From global ideals to local realities - the foundations of sustainability.
SUSTAIN-FISH is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, the Havbruk2 program, and includes researchers from Chile, Scotland and Norway. The project period is 01.06.2016 -31.05.2019.
The aquaculture industry is subject to regulations, standards and indicators generated at a variety of management levels: international, national and industry. SUSTAIN-FISH will map and study the existent standards and indicators available for defining sustainable production in aquaculture on a global, national and industry level, and create insight into how the industry is applying these.
The proposed project is designed to develop indicators for sustainability by studying these indicators from different angles. In the first three work packages, the already existent sustainability standards and indicators will be mapped and we will gain knowledge of the frictions and fits between existent standards, and the needs of the industry and society at large. In addition we will study how these standards are implemented on a company level in three countries: Norway, Chile and Scotland. The results will be combined in an integrated, international comparative analysis, and the projects results will provide policy advice to stakeholders and authorities by identifying the gaps that needs to be addressed, and improvement possibilities for developing sustainability indicators.
Primary and secondary objectives
The primary objective of ‘From global ideals to local realities – the foundations of sustainability’ is to develop robust indicators for the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability by mapping the vast web of standards and indicators for sustainability and study how these affect the aquaculture industry, and addressing the gaps and improvement possibilities.
The secondary objectives are to:
- Conduct a thorough mapping of existing standards and indicators to create an overview of the indicators of sustainability that exist and to provide insight into how the industry itself perceives and applies these standards.
- Produce and publish internationally relevant research on sustainability indicators and how these affect the industry and to what extend the industry implements sustainability in their operations / on company level.
- Provide policy advice by addressing the gaps and conflicts of how standards and indicators are described and implemented.
