Historie

Sverd i fjell is a commemorative monument located in the Hafrsfjord neighborhood of Madla, a borough of the city of Stavanger in Rogaland, Norway.HistoryThe monument was created by sculptor Fritz Røed from Bryne and was unveiled by King Olav V of Norway in 1983. The three bronze swords stand tall and are planted into the rock of a small hill next to the fjord. They commemorate the historic Battle of Hafrsfjord which by tradition took place there in the year 872, when King Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under one crown. The largest sword represents the victorious Harald, and the two smaller swords represent the defeated petty kings. The monument also represents peace, since the swords are planted into solid rock, so they may never be removed.Popular cultureThe monument was featured in the 2005 documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, when Sam Dunn traveled to Norway to document on Norwegian black metal.The monument also gives its name to the closing track on the Leaves' Eyes album King of Kings.

Easy to get to via public bus from the center of Stavanger. Great views out onto the water. If you want a photo by the swords, have to be patient at busier times as everyone else lines up.
Interessant historie vedr. sverdene. Sverd i fjell er et monument ved Hafrsfjord i Stavanger, Norge. Det ble reist i 1983 til minne om slaget i Hafrsfjord i 872, hvor Harald Hårfagre seiret og samlet Norge til ett rike. Monumentet består av tre store sverd som er støpt i bronse og er plassert i fjellet ved fjorden. Sverdene symboliserer fred, enhet og frihet. Den største sverdet representerer Harald Hårfagre, mens de to mindre sverdene representerer de beseirede kongene. Monumentet er et populært turistmål og en viktig del av norsk kulturarv.
This peaceful and nice spot features a sandy beach and convenient parking. It's also accessible by bus, though be prepared for a 10-20 minute walk from the nearest bus stop. Powerful monument that offers a great photo opportunity. By a small beach that lets you enjoy the sun. There are a few parking spaces.
