Polaria

Historie

Polaria is the world's most northerly aquarium. It is located in Tromsø, in northern Norway.Rather than a mainly scientific aquarium such as the one in Bergen in the Norwegian midlands, Polaria, which opened in May 1998, is designed to be an educational experience, with particular emphasis on displays for children. Most of the displays focus on the northerly islands of Svalbard. There is a five-screen panoramic cinema, an "Arctic Walkway" area containing displays of polar exploration equipment, stuffed animals and simulated permafrost, many conventional aquaria displaying local marine life as well as open tanks and display tanks containing rock-shore animals, baby fish and other child-friendly exhibits. Its centerpiece is an open pool containing a group of bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus. These are trained and there are regular displays, as much to keep the animals active and healthy as for public entertainment. The seal enclosure has observation blisters set into its sides, so that visitors can look up at the animals from underneath, and a submerged walkway in a transparent tunnel across the bottom, allowing close access to the animals in their natural environment. The building itself is also worthy of note. Its striking design represents ice floes that have been pressed up on land by the rough seas of the Arctic. This attractive piece of modern architecture echoes the Arctic Cathedral across the harbour in Tromsdalen on the mainland.

Wonderful little place. You get to see the beautiful seals play and have fun in general. A must visit place, especially if you got children, as they will love the fishes and the seals. They have small shows about the auroras and arctic life, as well as feeding sessions a couple of times a day. Check up on what's planned for they day on their website. As of the time of writing, they are also in the process of adding new seal pools including an outdoor one, so definitely exciting.
Educational and Entertaining Polaria Aquarium is a fantastic place to learn about Arctic marine life and the impact of climate change on the region. The educational exhibits are informative and engaging, while the aquariums provide close-up views of fascinating creatures. Highlights of the Aquarium The star attractions of Polaria are undoubtedly the playful harbor seals and bearded seals. Visitors can watch them swim, feed, and interact with their trainers during scheduled sessions. The panoramic cinema offers a breathtaking journey through the Arctic, showcasing the region's diverse landscapes and wildlife. More to Explore Beyond the seals and cinema, Polaria offers a variety of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to delve deeper into the Arctic's unique ecosystem. You can learn about the vital role of plankton, explore the icy depths of the Arctic Ocean through an augmented reality experience, and discover how climate change is affecting the region's delicate balance. Perfect for Families with Kids Polaria is a great place to visit with children. The engaging exhibits, playful seals, and interactive displays will keep them entertained and learning throughout their visit. The aquarium is relatively small, so it's manageable for young children, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. A Must-See in Tromsø Whether you're interested in marine life, conservation, or simply looking for a fun and educational activity, Polaria Aquarium is a must-see in Tromsø. It's a great way to spend a few hours and gain a deeper appreciation for the Arctic's unique wonders. Tips for Your Visit To make the most of your visit to Polaria, plan your trip around the seal feeding times. Be sure to dress warmly, as the aquarium can get chilly, especially near the seal pools. Allow enough time to explore all the exhibits and enjoy the panoramic cinema experience.
Interesting museum, the stories focused on how you can make an impact are really powerful. Love that minimalism was presented as a concept. They are expanding and the new building is expected to open in 2025.
A very small museum on the shores and has few seals and a small aquarium. You get to view a 15 minute video about the landscape of Northern Tromso. The aquarium has few salmon and crabs but their highlights are their seals. They steal the show with their playful nature and show off when you talk to them. Plan your visit to align with their feeding time and you will enjoy the show. I was surprised by how they are trained and can respond to the trainers commands..
In the heart of Tromsø, Polaria Aquarium is a delightful escape into the underwater wonders of the Arctic. Despite its modest size, this venue packs a punch with its diverse marine life and engaging exhibits. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a sense of wonder as you embark on a journey through the icy depths of the Arctic Ocean. The aquarium boasts a fascinating array of species native to these frigid waters, from playful seals to majestic fish. One of the highlights of my visit was witnessing the feeding time for the seals at 15:30. It was an unforgettable experience watching these graceful creatures glide effortlessly through the water as they eagerly awaited their meal. The dedication of the staff to providing enriching experiences for both visitors and animals alike was truly commendable. Despite its small size, Polaria Aquarium offers a wealth of educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Interactive exhibits and informative displays provide insight into the unique ecosystems of the Arctic and the importance of conservation efforts to protect them. Overall, my visit to Polaria Aquarium is positive. From the friendly staff to the captivating marine life, it's a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Tromsø. I highly recommend setting aside time to witness the feeding time for the seals—it's an experience you won't soon forget!
Small exhibition so take your time to enjoy all the details. Interactive displays, aquatic fauna, and the seals! Plan to arrive at 10 am so you get a good spot to see the first feeding and training session of the seals at 10:30 am then explore the premises and be back at the seals area at 12:30 pm to see another session!Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
We only had an hour before it closed due to our ship arriving late, but had to pay full price . We just made the last seal feeding show which was good. Loved the big blimpy bearded seals!! The interactive exhibits were also quite good, but the live exhibits were few in number compared to other aquariums we have visited around Norway and the rest of the world. The moon jellies were a little uninspiring as we have experienced much better ones with striking lighting. The shop was good though.
A well presented centre looking to expand further. Shop prices are a little on the high side but entry tickets are good value.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesNei
One of the most northerly aquariums anywhere. It's a Family friendly and multi lingual site, with some of the friendliest people you will meet particularly the lady on the till and katrine who did the ' ice to see you ' event, where you feed the seals ice. My partner loved it . The aquarium is not large though is expanding and it concentrates on local aquatic creatures and environmental issues facing the area. Fantastic day out
Seal feeding nice experience. Amazing movies room with immersive screen. Acquarium tunnel is a plus.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidOpptil 10 minForhåndsbestilling anbefalesNei
