Tromso Arctic Reindeer Experience

Info

Tromsø Arctic Reindeer Experience is the only complete reindeer experience carried out by traditional Sami Reindeer Herders within a close drive of Tromsø

Historie

The Oskal family has been living with Reindeer for hundreds if not thousands of years. Although the Saami, reindeer herders now use snow machines, boats and even helicopters to move their animals the traditions and their way of life still remain. We wish to share these traditions with you and leave you with a greater understanding of our way of life and history.

We also want you to have fun and experience the joy of being so close to our Reindeer, and then the feeling of coming from the cold outside into a warm lavu with the smells of a cooked lunch mixing with the log fire warming the senses and bringing with a peace and calm which is only increased as the sounds of the traditional joik fills the lavu.

This is a ritual which for us is an important way of life and it is our pleasure and aim to let you feel and experience it.

We look forward to welcoming you.

What a truly remarkable experience it was, costing around £118 each at the time of this writing. The journey entailed a coach ride of approximately 20 minutes each way, the entire experience was totalling about 4 hours, yet despite several coach loads and the bustling camp, it never felt crowded or rushed. Our time in the Lavvu at the beginning and end of the experience was enriching, as we delved into the culture of the Sami people and their reindeer. Engaging in activities such as feeding the reindeer within the expansive compound and enjoying a delightful sleigh ride for 10 minutes was truly unforgettable. At lunchtime, we relished a hearty stew in the dining tent, followed by an opportunity to try our hand at lassoing. Throughout our visit, we were generously offered endless servings of tea and cookies in the cozy tea cabin and dining tent. Overall, it was an immensely gratifying and worthwhile adventure.
It was lovely to touch and feed reindeer in the camp. They have such individual characters! The Sami style buildings and fire place, traditional dinner of 3 meals, delicious! History, culture, and demonstration of some daily life was priceless. The girls, our guides, were so warm and welcoming. And a cherry on the cake, Northern lights, which were the added bonus, but our only chance, it turned out, for lights viewing! We will remember this trip for a long time...
What a fantastic experience we had!! A family of four with an 8 year old and a 21 month old. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The reindeer were beautiful and friendly; the people were kind, caring, and truly had a servant's heart; the food was delicious; and learning about the Sami culture was delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed feeding and being with the reindeer. We took the 25-30 reindeer sled ride, which was wonderful. The scenery was majestic and the reindeer were well trained. We would have been content with the 10-15 minute ride, however the longer ride held the kiddos' attention. It was very cold -2 C, however, the weather app reported it feeling like -8 C, but the fires in the tents gave us an opportunity to get warm. Our son loved learning how to lasso. There was a shop on site, but we didn't make it because we spent extra time in the food tent! If/when we go back to Tromsø, we will do it again!!! Blessings
When we went here in January 2024, it was such an awesome experience. The tour guides were very accommodating, informative, and friendly. We traveled from Tromsø to the reindeer camp via bus, we learned about the native people, the Sami, and about their way of life. We also went on a reindeer sleigh ride, saw northern lights, had hot chocolate and ate a delicious dinner. Everything from start to finish was an absolutely wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend going if you haven’t had the chance yet!
Amazing experience, at first I thought it might be a little short but it turned out to be perfect. Was pretty cold today at -9 but the tents were nice and warm. There was also hot coffee/chocolates for us which was super comforting. Interacting with the reindeers is kinda fun and learning about Sami culture was interesting. Overall very well planned and worth your money for the experience
Overall the activity is nice to meet the reindeer, they are very cute. Organization for the tour is good. Note this activity is mass tourism: you go with a large bus! The stop is about 30mins by bus from Tromso. We were unlucky with the weather, but still cool to feed the reindeer. You gather in a large Sami tent to have a dinner salmon starter / reindeer stew for main / chocolate cake for dessert. The Sami will tell a bit about traditions and does some singing - overall feels a bit fake and just for the tourist. To really learn about Sami culture there must be some more interesting private tours available which go a bit further out.
We had an excellent time experiencing the Sami culture and among the reindeer. It was so thrilling spending time among these animals. While feeding them, if you feel cold you can even go and get yourself a cup of hot chocolate and cookies. After the feeding session, there is a session where we learnt a lot of the Sami people and their culture. It was a very nice experience altogether.
Excellent tour! Unfortunately we were not able to do the sledging because it rained the day before we were reimbursed. However we were very lucky and saw an amazing aurora!
We had a really good experience here. Taking the long reindeer sled ride through a sunny field, was perfect. We were there on the first day that sunlight was actually on the snow in the field and the staff was so excited they scooted off to revel in it before the tour started. Feeding and interacting with the reindeer was the highlight of the half day spent there. Getting to watch how the reindeer interact with each other and the people feeding them. Some of them are quite unfriendly with others. Lots of fun. The reindeer soup was good, although the flavour of reindeer meat is not to my liking, a cross between beef liver and lamb. Fun to have it served in the firelight inside the communal teepee. At the end the 2 girls Avala and sorry I didn’t catch the other name did an excellent job teaching the visitors about Sami culture, the day before Sami Day . Recommend this for the reindeer interaction and cultural experience.
What a fabulous experience! I loved spending time with the reindeer and feeding them. The weather was appropriately cold when we visited, you need to dress very well to be protected against it. Hope to visit again!
