I found it very beautiful here. The old buildings in the fields and the heavenly peace and quiet. There's a picnic area. A nice stop before heading to the ferry to Trelleborg.

Dilapidated limestone kilns. Unfortunately, the signs are no longer legible. There is no further information available. The concept is interesting, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

The lime kilns were built in the mid-19th century when there was a large-scale lime extraction in the area. As early as 1701, a map of Östra Torp parish states that Count Beck-Friis was allowed to “take lime on property no. 1”. This is the oldest known record of lime mining in this area. Today, there are about ten lime kilns preserved northeast of Östra Torp village. The oldest were built in the mid-19th century, the youngest in the 1930s. The kilns are all of the so-called dome type. Through a hole in the side, a “charge” was built inside the kiln. This consisted of limestone that was alternated in different layers with coal and it covered the entire dome room. There was a grate in the floor under which the fireplace was located. During firing, the entrance hole was bricked up and the fuel was added from the back of the dome. Each firing required 5-6 tons of coal and lasted about 40 hours. The limestone was heated to about a thousand degrees and after firing it was “quenched” with water. After the lime was completely fired, it was filled into barrels and transported away via a narrow-gauge railway. At the turn of the century, around eighty people were employed in both the quarrying of the lime and the firing. In 1938, the number was 48 people. The last time lime was fired in Östra Torp was in a kiln in 1951.
