Historie

The Flåm Line is a 20.2km long railway line between Myrdal and Flåm in Aurland, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flåmsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. The line's elevation difference is 863m; it has ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 percent . Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flåm Line is now almost exclusively a tourist service and has become the third-most visited tourist attraction in Norway.Construction of the line started in 1924, with the line opening in 1940. It allowed the district of Sogn access to Bergen and Oslo via the Bergen Line. Electric traction was taken into use in 1944; at first El 9 locomotives were used, and from 1982 El 11. Until 1991, the train connected with a ferry service from Flåm to Gudvangen. In 1992, freight services were terminated, and due to low ticket prices and high operating costs, the line was nearly closed. In 1998, Flåm Utvikling took over marketing and ticket sale for the line, prices were heavily increased and El 17 locomotives were introduced. The trains remain operated by the Norwegian State Railways, while the line itself is owned and operated by the Norwegian National Rail Administration.

We didn't really expect the thousands of tourists from the cruise ships that land directly at the train station in Flåm. The train ride was nice, but full of hundreds of other tourists from the cruise ships or buses. There was a stop at a waterfall with a "show", which seemed a bit like the crazy evening entertainment at a cruise ship. The train tracks are definitely a great engineering accomplishment for Norway, and it's nice to experience that. However, coming from Switzerland, normal train routes in Switzerland are more scenic than this one.
Having read about the extraordinary vistas on the train to Flam called among the most scenic in the world, we were slightly underwhelmed by this journey. It is quite beautiful -- there are several lovely waterfalls along the way -- but the vistas are nothing compared to what you'll see in Flam itself, and several extremely long tunnels often block the view. A pretty trip, but plan time in Flam to enjoy it fully.
The train ride is amazing with some magnificent view and magical nature. This is definitely one of the best scenic train route. The train goes from Flåm to Myrdal.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidOpptil 10 minForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
Amazing scenery and a great journey on this famous railway. We arrived in Flam by boat which meant we only had a short walk to the station. On board audio guide and pictures kept us informed throughout the journey. Quick stop for photographs midway was great. A journey not to be missed. Railway museum at Flam is free of charge and gives an interesting insight into the railways history.
Lovely way to see the countryside. Stops at a stunning waterfall. The only downside for me was, there is no English commentary- there is a screen but if you don't look up at the right time, you miss it!Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidOpptil 10 minForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
Even though the railway is only 20 km long and the journey lasts an hour it has to be the best bang for your buck experience of a train in terms of scenery that you can get anywhere in the world. It's just magical and something that you have to do if you come to this part of Norway.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
It's definitely worth doing it. But I would recommend buying one-way tickets only uphilland renting a bike for downhill in Myrdal behind the train station or down the hill in Kårdal Vatnahalsen station. From Kårdal, you need around 1-1:15 hours to get to Flåm where you will drop in the bikes. Family with 4 members will pay 3000NOK train and bikes . The whole way is almost a downhill with 2 short uphill stages. For me personally, the left side of the train has better views uphills. Be careful, Thursdays the is a cruise ship coming and almost everything is booked out.
The train between Flam and Myrdal is awesome! My wife and I rode both directions. The train cars are old school but very comfy. The train takes you on a very picturesque stroll through the mountains. There was a lot of snow by Myrdal so there were a lot of skiers near the top. Wonderful train ride and would recommend it to anyone.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
Ok, I have to admit the waterfall is stunning and the included show with the Huldra is really nice. At some spots they could have gone slower so that you can enjoy the beauty of the scenery more. Receiving more information about the surroundings would have been great too. I would say if you have done a road trip through Norway, skip it. If not, do it.
We cycled the route rather take the train which was easy and fun on electric bikes but I wouldn't attempt the uphill on a normal bike. Cycling back to Flam downhill was fast and exhilarating. Highly recommended.
