Historie

We arrived by chance after a ride on the ferry and were amazed at the quality of the museum. It is a collection of buildings in at different historical periods, showing how people lived in detail. We were fascinated with the Viking church and the spatial distribution inside the houses. We would have liked to have had more time and taken advantage of the guided tour. The museum is mainly open air, due to the snowy weather the floor was muddy. We slipped several times, I recommend appropriate shoes.
The Folkemuseum in Oslo is highly recommended for those interested in Norwegian history and culture. The open-air museum features a wide array of historic buildings, including traditional wooden houses and the impressive Gol Stave Church. Visitors enjoy the immersive experience, with live demonstrations, cultural performances, and detailed exhibits that bring Norway’s past to life. It’s an excellent place to explore the country’s heritage in a scenic and educational setting.
All the various activities were very nice. It included many houses from different years you could visit, with people dressed as they would dress in the past. It was at the same time instructive and enjoyable. On sunny days it is also possible to have a picnic there which is very nice.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesNei
Amazing experience. You can dig into different reconstructed houses but you’ll also find farm animals and people acting and dressed as villagers. Both for adults and kids. 2-3h needed for a minimum good experience.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetid
It was definitely a great experience visiting this place on a summer day. We got to go to several spots featured in the open air museum map. It’s also nice to read the descriptions they have inside the old establishments. Highly recommend for you to visit during your short stay in Oslo. Some of the staff were really patient in explaining the history of the old houses. It wasn’t a boring activity since you go from one place to another. The museum was easy to reach too. Inside the area, you can also grab coffee and pastry in a cafe or you can buy cute souvenirs too. You can also rent lockers for your bags so you wouldn’t have to bring them with you when you go around.
We had lunch at the cafeteria and it was pretty good. We went to the OBOS apartment building. It was very fascinating with showing with the apartment. Buildings would look like from the late 1800s up to the 1960s. they had curated items from around Scandinavia for these rooms. It was very interesting. I highly suggest going but allow some time to see the exhibits and the old buildings. Fascinating.
Absolutely incredible, do not miss! I have never seen anything like this. You walk around authentic homes and buildings built from 1200-1900. This is such a beautiful way to showcase history and allow guests to walk through it and experience it!Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
It is a really big place, so you need a day to visit everything. You can access everything easy with stroller or wheelchair. The exposition is big, there are also animals chicken, pigs, cows, horses and pony. It’s a nice place to visit with small children, because there is also a big playground.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
I did not expect such an organized village that felt like stepping back in time. It was as if I had entered a village for the first time, just like in the books or the old days of a traveler. The old houses, the walking paths, the trees, and the wonderful scents made for an incredible experience. The smell of wet wood inside the houses, the water dripping from the roofs—it was all very authentic and immersive. The church is very unique and great wood crafted details inside and out. It’s a carefully prepared and preserved open-air museum where you can easily spend half a day. Definitely worth a visit.
Norsk Folkemuseum is a fantastic dive into Norwegian history! You can spend the whole day here with loads of fun activities for kids. The exhibits are varied, and you can tailor your visit to be as long or short as you like. The friendly staff makes it even better. Just a heads-up, you’ll need special coins if you want something inside the open air museum- as they don’t accept VISA. A wonderful visit for a fun and educational day out!
