A great museum that recreated and recorded the Norwegian history, culture and people. There are an English speaking guide that takes you through the museum to introduce to various buildings and locations to explain the exhibit. It was very educational. You can spend a whole day in here to really understand and appreciate the history of Norway.
This museum is a huge complex of different exhibitions, including various houses, shops, farm, apartments, post, bank and a lot of stuff. Besides that all, there are some museums on this territory. It is not so good organized, I could not cleverly manage my route even with map. My favourite item here was the church.
The Folkemuseum in Oslo is highly recommended for those interested in Norwegian history and culture. The open-air museum features a wide array of historic buildings, including traditional wooden houses and the impressive Gol Stave Church. Visitors enjoy the immersive experience, with live demonstrations, cultural performances, and detailed exhibits that bring Norway’s past to life. It’s an excellent place to explore the country’s heritage in a scenic and educational setting.
The folk museum in Oslo is really a delight. The workers there go above and beyond to make it a great experience. They dress up in traditional clothing from the different eras and show you how household things were done during that time. They also tell stories about the times. It's very interactive and educating without being boring. They speak Norwegian, as well as English and sometimes other languages too. The museum has indoor and outdoor parts. So it's recommended to go there, when the weather is not too bad. They even have an interactive part for kids. Highly recommend if you wanna learn about Norwegian history and still explore on your own.
This place is SO much more than I was expecting. This is more than a museum - this is an experience. Yes, there are some buildings with excellent displays of life in Norway over the years BUT I wasn’t expecting the acres of land with entire buildings, moved and rebuilt showing real life in Norway - from farms to apartment buildings, homes to shops. Worth the visit and worth spending time here
We arrived by chance after a ride on the ferry and were amazed at the quality of the museum. It is a collection of buildings in at different historical periods, showing how people lived in detail. We were fascinated with the Viking church and the spatial distribution inside the houses. We would have liked to have had more time and taken advantage of the guided tour. The museum is mainly open air, due to the snowy weather the floor was muddy. We slipped several times, I recommend appropriate shoes.
All the various activities were very nice. It included many houses from different years you could visit, with people dressed as they would dress in the past. It was at the same time instructive and enjoyable. On sunny days it is also possible to have a picnic there which is very nice.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesNei
It is a really big place, so you need a day to visit everything. You can access everything easy with stroller or wheelchair. The exposition is big, there are also animals chicken, pigs, cows, horses and pony. It’s a nice place to visit with small children, because there is also a big playground.Besøkte stedetPå en helgedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesJa
This was such a cool museum! There was a great balance of interactive exhibits and traditional museum artifacts. We especially liked how the indoor exhibits had all the information on an electronic kiosk which was easy to switch between languages. We arrived right when it opened which I would highly recommend if you’re going on a weekend because it understandably gets pretty crowded.
I did not expect such an organized village that felt like stepping back in time. It was as if I had entered a village for the first time, just like in the books or the old days of a traveler. The old houses, the walking paths, the trees, and the wonderful scents made for an incredible experience. The smell of wet wood inside the houses, the water dripping from the roofs—it was all very authentic and immersive. The church is very unique and great wood crafted details inside and out. It’s a carefully prepared and preserved open-air museum where you can easily spend half a day. Definitely worth a visit.
