Seiltokt

HISTORY
After comprehensive refurbishment work the Statsraad Lehmkuhl appear as one of the world´s best preserved square rigged tall ships. Her history begins in 1914 in Bremerhaven-Geestemünde, Germany, where she was built as a training ship for the German merchant marine under the name “Grossherzog Friederich August”.
After the 1st World War the ship was taken as booty by the British. In 1921 she was brought to Bergen by the former minister Kristofer D. Lehmkuhl, and used as a sail training ship from 1923 until the outbreak of the 2nd World War. As a token of appreciation and gratitude to Kristofer Lehmkuhl for his work for the school training ship cause, and for his work in the 1905-cabinet, the ship was renamed “Statsraad Lehmkuhl” (Minister Lehmkuhl). Except during the war between 1940 – 1945 when the Germans occupied her and renamed her “Westwärts”, the ship was run by Bergens Skoleskib continuously until 1966. In 1967, shipowner Hilmar Reksten saved the ship from being sold to a foreign country, and in 1978 he donated the Statsraad Lehmkuhl to Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl who has owned and operated the ship ever since.
In the further operation of the ship, economy and maintenance work became huge challenges for “Stiftelsen”. However, own earnings, support from the authorities and a significant contribution from Statsraad Lehmkuhl´s friendship association as well as private subscribers, has resulted in the fact that Norway´s biggest tall ship is today fully refurbished to former beauty!
SAIL CRUISES
A dream under white sails!
Imagine yourself at the wheel on one of the world´s largest and most beautiful sailing ships – or helping to set more than 2000m2 of sails in less than one hour! No previous sailing experience is required; you will receive training under way. Let your dream come true!
Statsraad Lehmkuhl is one of the world´s most prestigious sailing ships. You come aboard as a sail trainee, which means that you participate in the activities of the ship. You´ll be on duty with professional sailors, doing everything from keeping watch, steering the ship, fire inspections to working in the galley. Great care is taken to preserve the maritime traditions, especially sailing maneuvers. To many people climbing the rigging is the ultimate sailing experience, but this is completely voluntary. Between the duties there might be time for some shanty singing or knot work… Your quarters are below deck in hammocks, like in the good old days. You have to bring your own sleeping bag.
Aboard the ship you will meet people from different countries, backgrounds and generations. When you are out on the ocean and the sails are set, companionship is all that matters. The atmosphere on board is indescribable, it has to be experienced!
MINI CRUISES
In May and June we normally do mini cruises in the evening in the idyll among the skerries outside Bergen. These trips are perfect for friends, couples, organizations or companies who want to do something social and pleasant together. On these trips we offer you a tempting buffet of shrimps and different kinds of herring. This is included in the price and you buy the beverages extra. There is also live music on board these evening cruises. All cruises start and end at Bradbenken; Statsraad Lehmkuhl´s mooring space at the famous “Bryggen”. We will either cruise north or south in the skerries, depending on the wind- and weather conditions. If the weather is not so good, we recommend you to bring warm and windproof clothes.
