A delightful museum. Many real exhibits with fascinating histories. You can watch documentary footage of the journey in the museum. It is highly recommended to watch the feature film about this journey before your visit. If you haven’t visited the nearby museums, this is a great opportunity to visit several delightful museums at once! Highly recommended!
It was a quite an interesting museum about the world's greatest explorer called Thor Heyerdahl who in 1947, he sailed 8,000 km 5,000 mi across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between societies
Went as part of Oslo Pass. Out of the 3 museums I found this on the most interesting. Fascinating how the Kon Tiki, RA I, RA I and Tigris were built and stories of their journeys. The Kon Tiki was a lot bigger than I thought it was. How any of the rafts and boats crossed the ocean was a miracle. I recommend at least visiting thus museum. Well worth it.
If you are in Oslo this museum, and the neighbouring RA museum, is a must. The complete story of the expedition In 1947, led by explorer Thor Heyerdahl who sailed, with four friends, a fragile balsa wood raft along an ancient path some 4,300 miles across the Pacific. He proved that ancient civilisations crossed the Pacific in primitive boats. The museum exhibits the actual balsa wood raft used for the exhibition, and provides a plethora of visual material detailing the background to the event, the method of construction of the raft, and details of the voyage. Perhaps lesser known is the RA expedition, which is similarly displays and explained in the adjoining museum. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative experience.
Kon-Tiki Museum, Oslo Kon-Tiki museum! Thor Heyerdahl, a hero from my youth, who sailed in this hand build raft, From Peru to Polynesia, proving to the world that 1600 years ago people already crossed the Ocean. This kind of adventure inspired me to travel the world! A boyhood dream come true! A bucket list item accomplished! Thor Heyerdahl, a scientist had his way of proofing a point! The incredible journey is well covered in an Oscar receiving documentary and can be well researched for those that want to get exacting details! Link to the movie, sound may not be fantastic, but hey made in 1951: https://youtu.be/YxTxyK-Esnk?si=AbORGv3WREcPvhTN For us walking through this small but very impressive Museum was almost like time travel! The original Raft well preserved in full display, as well as the second Raft called “Ra” in a separate hall were full inspiring! A morning well spend! Loved every minute of it! #norway #oslo #thetourist #alifetimetrip #daytrip #kontiki #kontikimuseum #thorheyerdhal
A cool museum dedicated to the expeditions of the Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl. Included in the Oslo pass. The museum is named after the Kon-Tiki expedition, in which Heyerdahl and his crew sailed a hand-built raft from Peru to the Polynesian islands in 1947 to demonstrate the possibility of prehistoric trans-oceanic contact between South American and Polynesian cultures. The museum houses the original Kon-Tiki raft as well as other artifacts from Heyerdahl's expeditions, including the Ra II, a reed boat used to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, the museum features exhibits on Heyerdahl's other projects, including archaeological finds from Easter Island and the Galápagos Islands. The Kon-Tiki Museum aims to promote understanding of cultural history and environmental issues through the story of Heyerdahl's adventurous undertakings.
Thor Heyerdahl comes across as slightly crazy, building balsa wood rafts to sail the Pacific and reed ones to sail the Atlantic. Yet this museum tells the story of him doing just that, including his most famous feat of proving with Kon Tiki that ancient South American civilisations could indeed have reached Polynesia. The restored Kon Tiki and Ra II are the centrepieces, and the story is a fascinating one and testament to a Norwegian spirit of adventure. The only negative is that it has changed very little since I first visited in 2009, and it could very much do with a revamp as the displays are looking a bit dated and tired. Despite that, certainly worth a visit, especially if you don’t know or only vaguely remember the story.
06.2024/ visited around 12:30 a.m, during a working day so it wasn’t crowded. We chose to buy a combo family ticket for all the 3 museums. The museum is very well organised. We enjoyed our visit.Besøkte stedetPå en ukedagVentetidIngen ventetidForhåndsbestilling anbefalesNei
Great museum. I learned a lot! The US Navy provided the materials for Thor! Also he went to see US President Harry Truman after their successful voyage as thanks! Kontiki is a great testament to human spirit! There's a documentary from 1950 in the basement. It won an Oscar. Cool!
Very interesting, don’t skip the movie part It’s a cool museum about Thor Heyerdahl’s expeditions on Kon-Tiki and Ra. Very touching story of Thor and his team. There are models of raft and ship and a lot of information about journeys. There are two movies about Thor’s expedition - one is 1 hour, length of another one is 10min, it’s a short copy of the whole movie. I really advise you to find a time for a full one - it’s very interesting story filmed on the raft during the expedition. There are also museum passes for 2 or 3 museums Fram, Kon-Tiki, Maritime Museum with a reduced price. ROAD: you can reach the museum by ferry or by bus.
