This museum is a great way to learn about Swedish history from before the birth of Christ until the early 1900s! The gold room in the basement is amazing and the rest of the exhibits are also very well done, including interactive parts and period piece short films. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get a general history of Sweden, and as a bonus you get free entry into a small exhibit from the Economy Museum which is inside the History Museum.
Superb museum that’s great for kids. Lots of interactive elements, as well as regular short themed guided tours in English. The exhibits are cleverly laid out and bite size which makes it super easy to navigate. Helped me understand the history and in particular the Viking period. We were also treated to an outdoor summer special with people dressed in period costumes allowing kids to bake bread, shoot arrows, make necklaces etc etc
The Viking displays in my view are the best i have seen in my many visits to museums in Europe. The range and quality of the exhibits is amazing, but they are superbly enhanced by the digital displays that allow you to select, zoom in on, and find out about individual objects in the displays. The text can be read in English.
Visited this museum for their new famous Viking exhibition that just opened this month. 150sek was a steep price compared to some museums, but it is also worth the cost when you realize how big this museum actually is. In fact, we were only able to visit two rooms as there was not enough time to scour through the entire building and exhibits.nnThe viking exhibition was a wonderful and fun hands-on experience. Though there were a lot of relics and trinkets from Gotland, uppsala and other places also had their fair share of glory too.nnThe puffs of smells were especially fun. There's also a huge magnet board where you can play with runes and create words. Kids rooms, arts, VR, and double screen cinemas are just to name a few of this amazing new 2024 exhibition of the Vikings.nnIf you do have time afterward and am not too tired, I also recommend heading to the dungeons lowest room and visiting the Gold Room to see the famous 3 gold bands of Sweden.
Amazing place about the national history of Sweden, from the beginning until today. Two levels in the historical building, purchased by the royal family ages ago.nThere's a lovely restaurant on the ground floor with a garden within the cloister of the building.
